When embarking on a Halong Bay cruise, exploring the majestic limestone karsts is only half the adventure. Why is it Called “Surprise Cave”?

Discovered by French explorers in 1901, the cave was originally named Grotte des Surprises (Cave of Surprises). The name perfectly captures the experience of visitors. From the outside, the entrance appears relatively small and unassuming. However, after climbing a stone staircase through the jungle canopy, you step inside to find a massive, awe-inspiring space that defies expectations. The sheer scale and beauty of the interior leave every visitor in a state of pure “surprise.”
